Out and About Lunch Idea

One of the things about doing all these tours is that eventually you'll end up at one when its time for lunch.  While eating out can be fun, its not always a feasible option. So what do you pack? Sandwiches are fine and dandy, however, let me share our favorite meal for on the go: Cracker Sandwiches

What you need:
  • Crackers
  • Lunch meat
  • Cheese
  • Fruit
  • Veggies
  • Drinks
Simply cut your meat and cheese into squares a little smaller than your crackers.  Pack in a tubberware with a cooler pack for safe keeping.  When its time for lunch assemble little cracker sandwiches.  This is one time I bring out the Capri Suns.  I only buy these for our lunches out together- not for school or anything else so its a special treat that makes lunch even better.

Why we like it?
  • Super easy to prep and pack
  • Kids love making their own versions
  • No one complains that theirs isn't right because they put it together (even my 2 year old)
  • Its different than a sandwich but still safe
  • Easily adapts to different diet restrictions in our family
I put the fruit and veggies out first when I'm unpacking at our picnic spot so they start eating that first.  I've used all types of crackers with this from salt free saltines to gourmet whole wheat crackers or gluten-free. Change the cracker and it totally changes the taste of the meal.  I don't usually do dessert but when I do, I usually save it for the car ride home or that last ten minutes when they just can't make it to the car because they are so tired.  This way if I've pushed them a little too long on a tour, it still ends on a happy moment- not focusing on how tired everyone is really.

What is your favorite out and about meal?
